Sir Michael Parkinson 1935-2023
We were very sad to hear the news that broadcast legend and former Lord's Taverners President Sir Michael Parkinson has passed away.

Sir Michael’s love affair with the charity began when he became a member in 1972 with his first game for the Taverners XI coming two years later when he top-scored with 83 against a Grand Prix Drivers XI. Their side was stacked with Formula One legends, which included names such as James Hunt (who scored 80), Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill and Niki Lauda, who took two wickets!
It’s a strong bond that continued across five decades and during his three-year tenure as President (2015-2018), he was not only able to attract some of the UK’s biggest names in showbusiness to Taverners events, but also meet hundreds of young people who benefit from the charity.
Speaking just after completing his Presidency, he said: “It’s very important to see the work and understand why we are all involved and the part we can all play in young peoples lives."

"I’ve often thought the only way that someone in my office can work is to call on mates and ask a favour. You can see the way people turn up to see the likes of Dame Edna, Rob Brydon, Sir Ian Botham and David Walliams, and the money we raise is fantastic. That is a crucial part of the job because in the end it is about making money for the charity, so it can continue to survive, grow and help even more young people.
“The entire trip has been wonderful and one I’ve really enjoyed.”
Our thoughts are with Sir Michael's family and friends at this sad time.
